Local Trade Idea: Investec Ltd (INL SJ) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Khumbulani Kunene

We enter a long position with a target price of R153.00 and a stop-loss of R128.00.

Investec Ltd is an international specialist bank that provides a range of financial products and services to a niche client base in its core geographies, being the United Kingdom (UK) and South Africa (SA).

The company continues to leverage its specialist banking expertise, strong balance sheet and international presence to support clients while creating long-term value for shareholders. In SA, the group has established a strong reputation for innovation, prudent risk management and disciplined capital allocation, enabling it to deliver sustainable long-term growth across varying economic cycles.

Technically, the price is in a developing ascending triangle pattern which makes the share an interesting candidate for a long position (see the black trendlines on the main chart). This pattern indicates a gradual build-up in buying pressure as higher lows continue to form beneath a relatively stable resistance level.

The weekly price symmetry analysis for the share also supports a bullish bias (see the insert), demonstrating that the price has repeatedly respected historically recurring cyclical turning points. The highlighted vertical bands identify periods where previous price swings have tended to reverse or accelerate.

Fading downside price momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram, and the recent sideway trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator, also supports our bullish view.

Buy/Sell Rationale

Technical Analysis

    • The lower panel is the occurrences of the Three Outside Up Japanese candlestick pattern - a reading of one indicates when such a pattern occurred. The pattern consists of a bearish candle, followed by a larger bullish candle that completely engulfs the previous day's real body, with the third candle closing higher to confirm that buying pressure has gained control (see the insert).
    • Our recommended entry range is R133.00 to R136.00, or as close as possible to R135.08 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is R153.00, representing ~13.3% upside from current levels.
    • Our proposed time to exit is mid-September 2026, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below R128.00, or 5.2% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above R136.00.

Fundamental view

    • Investec is a well-diversified, relationship-driven financial services group that provides tailored banking, investment, lending, advisory, treasury and wealth management solutions to high-net-worth individuals, corporates, institutions and government clients.
    • In terms of performance, FY26, adjusted earnings per share (EPS) rose 4.8% to 82.9 pence and revenue increased 4.2% to £2.28 billion. Net interest income (NII) fell 1.6% as growth in average interest earning assets and lower funding costs was offset by the negative endowment effect of declining global interest rates. NII was also impacted by margin pressure due to highly competitive pricing across operating jurisdictions. Non-interest revenue (NIR) grew 13.6% year-on-year.
    • The group has maintained robust capital and liquidity levels well above board-approved minimums, with capital and leverage ratios being ahead of regulatory requirements. Asset quality remains within group risk appetite limits, with exposures to a carefully defined target market and well covered by collateral.
    • Looking ahead, management's outlook statement was positive with the board expecting FY27 to be the peak investment year, with a positive inflection in both earnings growth delivery and sustainable improvements in returns to commence in FY28. This remains supportive of the group's plan to deliver return on equity (ROE) of ~16% and return on tangible equity (ROTE) of ~18% by FY30.
    • Overall, the business remains well-positioned to continue to support clients in navigating the current economic uncertainty and deliver on strategic initiatives to enhance long-term returns.
    • From a risk perspective, Investec's geographical spread introduces a higher level of sensitivity to currency movements and increases forecast risk, and the exposure to UK banking places a discount on the company relative to its SA peers. Lastly, a deterioration in economic fundamentals in the UK and SA poses a threat.
